Feast of Crumbs

Feast of Crumbs

I gave some crumbs to the birds
This morning.
Actually, it was a square of
Cornbread--two days old--
The last piece.
My children were not willing
To admit hunger so gluttonous
That they would need
To eat the last piece.
And so it waited,
Hardening to crumbs,
Ignored.
But the birds were grateful.
I noticed them in my lilac bush,
Puffing their feathers against
The cold.
And so I took the crumbs to them.
And they made a feast
Of the last piece.
